The City of Mosaics

Madaba

A living town built around one of the richest collections of Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics anywhere in the world — over 300 mosaics across churches, homes, and archaeological sites, most famously the 6th-century Madaba Map, the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of Jerusalem and the Holy Land, set into the floor of St. George's Church. Locals still worship in the same church the map is embedded in, so it's an active place of worship, not a museum piece behind glass.

Getting There

Madaba is about 30 minutes from Amman (30 km) and roughly 15 minutes from Mount Nebo, making the two an easy combined half-day trip — often paired with the Dead Sea as a full day out from Amman.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, since it's mostly an indoor, walkable town visit rather than an exposed outdoor site — spring and autumn are simply more pleasant for the walk between the church, the park, and the shops.

Practical Tips

St. George's Church is a working church, so dress modestly and be mindful if a service is in progress. Combine it with Mount Nebo in the same half-day — the drive between them is short and the two sites complement each other (biblical history at Nebo, its artistic record at Madaba).
